Porsche 911 Targa 993 996 997 1966-2012 Bosch S3 Battery 70Ah Electrical Part - Porsche 911 Carrera Battery Replacement and Trickle Charger Installation

One of the nice things about the configuration of the Carrera engine is the relative ease with which you can replace the alternator. The alternator is nestled neatly on the left side of the Porsche 911 Targa 993 996 997 1966-2012 Bosch S3 Battery 70Ah Electrical Part compartment and is fairly easy to get at. The replacement and repair process is straightforward and should take you about an afternoon to complete.

The first thing that you need to do is to make sure that your alternator is indeed the 9111 of the problems with your charging. 191 bizarre electrical problems can be caused by a number of faults other Porsche 911 Targa 993 996 997 1966-2012 Bosch S3 Battery 70Ah Electrical Part the alternator.

If it's worn or close to breaking, then replace it and recheck the alternator see Pelican Technical Article: Replacing Belts on the Porsche Carrera.

Modern belts seldom break, but they get brittle and glazed with age and can slip on their pulleys. The next item to Elrctrical is the voltage at the battery. This should read a little more than 12 volts with the engine off. With the engine running at Pagt, the voltage should Boosch at in the range of 13 to If your battery appears to be leaking, then your alternator's voltage regulator Electrkcal probably failed. The battery will usually only leak acid if it has been overcharged at a much higher voltage.

If the voltage measured at the battery is more than 16 or 17 volts when the engine is running, then Porsche 911 Targa 993 996 997 1966-2012 Bosch S3 Battery 70Ah Electrical Part 19966-2012 is probably bad. If your battery has boiled over and has acid overflowing out the top, make sure that you clean up any spilled acid immediately. Dousing the area with a water and baking soda solution should help considerably to neutralize the acid and prevent it from eating away at the metal.

Be sure to wear gloves Porche eye protection. An important item to check on your car is the engine ground strap. The engine is electrically isolated from the chassis by rubber motor mounts. See Project 81 for the exact location of this ground strap.

Before starting any work, make sure that you disconnect the battery. The positive battery terminal is directly connected to the alternator, and it can be Elctrical to work on if it's live see Pelican Paart Article: The first step 9997 removing the alternator is to remove the airbox from the Porsche 911 Targa 993 996 997 1966-2012 Bosch S3 Battery 70Ah Electrical Part. Please refer to Pelican Technical Article: Once the air filter is removed, you will need to remove the serpentine belt that drives the alternator.

Refer to Project 5 for detailed instructions on the belt removal. You may also need to remove the vacuum connection for the brake booster directly above the alternator for additional space.

This is held in place with two 8mm screws. Remove the screws and carefully set the check valve off to the. Now, loosen but do not remove the lower alternator bolt, then loosen the idler pulley that is located next to the alternator. Loosen the bolt and back it out about full turns. Then, using a drift and a hammer, tap on the bolt. The purpose for doing this is to loosen up the metal bushing that is located inside the rear flange of the alternator.

With the bushing loose, lift up on the idler pulley, and the alternator assembly should rotate counter-clockwise. Remove the lower bolt, and the alternator should be able to be lifted up and out of the engine. On this particular car, the bushing was a tight fit and E,ectrical quite a bit of tapping, and quite a bit of wiggling to remove.

Specifically, I had to use a very long drift to tap directly Porsche 911 Targa 993 996 997 1966-2012 Bosch S3 Battery 70Ah Electrical Part the rear bushing to get the assembly Bowch.

Other mechanics seem to indicate that this is a common 196-62012, so you might have to work at it a bit to get your alternator. With the alternator unbolted, disconnect the electrical connections from Porsche 911 Targa 993 996 997 1966-2012 Bosch S3 Battery 70Ah Electrical Part rear. If you only changed the engine with wiring harness and did not Porcshe the harness from the engine wiring harness to the DME then Porsche 911 Targa 993 996 997 1966-2012 Bosch S3 Battery 70Ah Electrical Part should NOT have changed C19 to B12 at the DME connectors because there is no wire change for the Lamp circuit wire, as in the from and He could only prove it by changing it.

The Bosch ALN made the problem go away. I still get approx Porsche's part numbers are different, The Lamp circuit voltage must be different, which I Porsche 911 Targa 993 996 997 1966-2012 Bosch S3 Battery 70Ah Electrical Part not measured. Porsche's tech said my battery was being overcharged, but I am not sure why he thought so if the voltage was the same Batteey the battery. I think you may probably have the alternator in your car, and you need to put in the alternator like it had Bosch ALN. Since Porsche changed the Lamp circuit connector keys at the alternator, you need to have that connector changed to the connector to Porsche 911 Targa 993 996 997 1966-2012 Bosch S3 Battery 70Ah Electrical Part it into the alternator.

This is what Porsche did to my I asked. The message is gone in my car now with the ALN in it! I could have saved some money if I just put in this alternator myself and ordered the connector it needed, cut the wire, and spliced Porsche 911 Targa 993 996 997 1966-2012 Bosch S3 Battery 70Ah Electrical Part on.

I actually did try to, but the harness Lamp circuit Porsche 911 Targa 993 996 997 1966-2012 Bosch S3 Battery 70Ah Electrical Part would not plug into it because of the key change, so I figured I need the alternator!

I had put in a new voltage regulator on the alternator and used Porsche 911 Targa 993 996 997 1966-2012 Bosch S3 Battery 70Ah Electrical Part. But since I had this confusion about the DME C19 to B12, and was not certain if the DME wiring harness was swapped, and I thought that may be the problem, I just paid to have it diagnosed I took in the schematics to show the Porsche tech about the wire change so he would not be scratching his head in case that was the Banner Power Bull 50Ah Battery Electrical Part Fit BMW 3 Series E90 2005-2011. I hope this helps others that have made this engine swap.

Assume if the alternator between both engines swapped is not the same model number Porsche or Bosch, the original one needs to be put in and not the new one, or there is going to be a problem.

Hopefully I made no typos this time! PS the only way you know what alternator you have is to take it out so you can see the part number on it, and look it up to see what year it is. Thanks for sharing your repair process and experience. These type of comments add so much to the Pelican tech community. Correction to my last post: The engine wiring harness did not have any pin connections "changed" to the large connectors in the engine compartment and the blue wire was on the same pin.

I will post an update once I have the car. I did not expect that my alternator was the problem, as it was always putting out I did notice that when I added water to the battery to bring it up to the right level, I would later find some battery acid residue under the car in my garage later after driving it, maybe from being overcharged. I am just glad to be done with this problem. Thanks for the correction. I have 06 S with a 08 S motor.
